It was another rainy Friday to end the working hours of the week and I was forced to stop at the traffic signal. I was in a splendid mood as it was a Friday evening and the downpour had marked the perfect start of my weekend. I looked around and saw people on bikes and cars all waiting for the signal to turn green. Suddenly my eyes fell on a dirty, shabby man on his bicycle trying to make way and come in front. Finally he landed up just beside me. I felt a great sense of pride being superior in some way to most of the people around. I looked down upon the “bicycle man” and said to him -”Just look at yourself! You are pathetic with dirt all around your body and clothes! Can’t you do some clean and respectable work?” Feeling insulted, the man rode off without replying.
I took pride in the undignified work that I had just done and zoomed my way back home. As I reached home, there was no electricity and the kitchen sink drain-pipe was jammed because of the heavy rain. I hurriedly dialed the plumber and I was told that the plumber would reach my place in an hour. It was 9pm and my doorbell rang! I opened the door to find the same “bicycle man” standing in front of my door with his plumber-toolkit! I was filled with shame and my pride had reached its nemesis. I showed him the pipe and being an expert he fixed it in no time. As he was about to leave he turned back and said to me –“Sir, just imagine what would have happened if my body and clothes were not dirty and my work was clean and respectable?” --- I was speechless!
A great lesson of life was learnt. Every Friday I would almost do the same things, feel the same way and be the same person. But this Friday had changed my thinking and my attitude towards people and life! The real meaning of work is to do whatever we do with sincerity and dedication. The goal of our lives should be to respect and love one and all and to do our work with sincerity and dedication. It will surely help us to be better individuals and also lead us to the zenith of success!
